What is Leon County’s Crime Map?

Leon County is constantly trying to find ways to ensure public safety among its citizens. One way they aim to do that is through its online, interactive crime map. Although it has been active for several years now, it is important to highlight its features to help citizens continue to feel safe in their neighborhoods.

The Leon County law enforcement has partnered with a website using mapping technology to provide the public with information regarding recent crimes in the area. The main goal is to help authorities reduce crime, while better-informing citizens in the nearby area. Self-reliance in the community can help to benefit community-oriented policing, while also keeping track of any crime that has recently happened. The technology uses the police department’s record systems to extract crime data that is the most current and places it on the online map for locals to see.

Details of the Crime Map

Leon County’s interactive online map shows the different streets and areas within the county. Citizens are able to get a clear, visual view of the crime that happens throughout their neighborhood. The Sheriff’s office has partnered with Crimemapping.com, a website used in different states in the U.S. to map out different types of crimes happening in real-time.

Citizens can access the map by going onto Leon County Sheriff’s Office’s website and finding the tab that reads, “Citizen Resources.” After that, they can find the section that says, “LCSO Crime Map” and view a map of the area, along with the various icons that indicate what crimes have taken place in the past seven days.

There are fifteen various categories of crime that can be found on the map. The following is a list of the included crimes that can be marked on the online map:

• Arson
• Assault
• Burglary
• Disturbing the Peace
• Drugs / Alcohol Violations
• DUI
• Fraud
• Homicide
• Motor Vehicle Theft
• Robbery
• Sex Crimes
• Theft / Larceny
• Vandalism
• Vehicle Break-In / Theft
• Weapons

In addition to the crime-specific icons on the map, users can also view the crime incidents in a detailed chart, showing the type of crime, its description, and its exact location. Leon County Crime Statistics

The year 2020 was the first time in five years that Leon County was not in the leading spot for crime in the state of Florida. Law enforcement officers in the county saw this as a triumph when they dropped to 3^rd in the state.

After years of attempting to shift the rate of crime in the county, officials reported a decline in every crime except for murder, which had 21 for the 2020 year. There were 3,845 incidents per 100,000 people in the year 2019. This marked a 13.7% drop from the previous year.

In addition, an article from 2021 highlighted how the numbers for sexual assault, burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft have all dropped in recent years. Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil stated that the drop in crime rates shows that their efforts are successful, but he is not ready to celebrate just yet.

“We’ve got some momentum in identifying social service vacuums in our community that needs to be filled, and we’re going to keep this moving in the right direction,” said McNeil. However, the issue of gun violence is still prevalent in Leon County.

According to data from 2022, so far there have been 56 shootings in Leon County. Out of the shootings, 32 resulted in injury, and 12 resulted in death.

Sheriff McNeil addressed gun violence as a serious concern for the county. “We still have too many shootings taking place in our community,” he said. “I’m not going to be sitting here pounding my chest excited about being 6^th in the state. When we get down to 67^th, I’ll be happy.”
